Carbon-Off Setting

What is Carbon Off-Setting?

Carbon Offset definition from Wikipedia: A carbon offset is a financial instrument representing a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.  Carbon offsetting as part of a "carbon neutral" lifestyle has gained some appeal and momentum.

How does carbon offsetting work?

Basically the organization to whom you pay the money invests in renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation. Carbonfund.org is a good one.  They have a calculator the helps a person calculate their carbon footprint.

Holiday Lighting with a Green Twist

Charlottesville, VA October 7, 2008  Albemarle Window Cleaning offers many unique services. Their most popular this time of year is the holiday lighting. But what makes this service so unique is that this year not only will they design and install holiday lights, but also offer the option of purchasing carbon off-setting.

Albemarle Window Cleaning has been lighting up businesses and residences throughout Charlottesville, VA since 2006. Last year they designed lightscapes for nearly 50 homes and businesses. This year after reviewing the numbers Jim Harshaw, the owner, realized that his professional grade holiday lights amounted to a significant carbon footprint for his business and customers.

"In this day and age many of us are concerned with not only energy costs but also the environmental impact of what we do.  Christmas lighting is no different.  This year not only are we offering high efficiency LED products but also the option to purchase your carbon offset"

In an effort to reduce the carbon footprint of his concerned customers, Jim is offering customers the option to purchase carbon off-setting this year. He estimates each residence would need to purchase between $10 and $20 worth of credit to offset the holiday lights he uses. Jim believes this is the first holiday lighting program to offer such a service to its customers.
